![]() ![]() This allowed the game to have a bit more credibility as well. Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman joined on as voice actors and the game was on its way. The move was to allow for a more cinematic look at WWII. Things like environmental destruction and dismemberment allowed for a more gruesome look at warfare. Utilizing the Modern Warfare engine as a base, Treyarch improved the physics model of the engine for this release. This allowed the series to simultaneously explore modern war scenarios and historic ones. Treyarch realized during the production of Call of Duty 3 that two years was much more feasible to make a game. Overall, fans didn’t quite understand the meaning behind two games so closely released together. More surprisingly, the next game would release later that same year. In June of 2008, Activision announced the series would return to World War II. Modern Warfare released in 2007 via Infinity Ward. Activision has its two studios, Treyarch and Infinity Ward, pulling shifts at this point. That’s largely in part because of the new approach to making Call of Duty games. This is technically Call of Duty 5, but games in the series would no longer go by numbers. ![]() Firstly, let’s talk about the beginnings of the game and why it released so soon after Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. ![]() Under the title Nazi Zombies, the game would return to the series’ starting point: World War II. That game mode first debuted in 2008’s Call of Duty World at War. We’re all excited to try Black Ops Cold War and its Zombies game mode. In short, let’s get talking about Call of Duty World at War. I adore this game and I’m excited to dive into its rich history today. The hours I spent playing Zombies in this game are likely in the hundreds. The best part of all is the introduction of an iconic game mode. We return to WWII in this entry and Treyarch gets a chance to show what it’s made of. In the grand scheme of the franchise, this is one of my all-time favorites. These creative decisions never made people collectively abandon the franchise, but back when Call of Duty was at its peak, the most absurd thing players could experience was slaughtering the living dead that originated from deceased Nazis. There’s a lot to be said about the history of World at War. The once relatively grounded war games became futuristic escapades. Although titles like Cold War remind people that this series is still willing to create stories that took place during real historical events, other games, such as Advanced Warfare, Ghosts, and the Black Ops sequels, show symptoms of deviation from what Call of Duty originally was. Its contributions to Call of Duty were important, and to this day, these features remain appealing, even after the novelty wore off.Īnother possible explanation for World at War’s impressive lifespan is how Call of Duty has changed in the past decade despite a reputation of releasing the same kind of game every year. These are probably the reasons why World at War is being played to this day. Thanks to this mode, Call of Duty got new iconic characters, managed to get actors such as Steve Blum, Robert Englund, and Sarah Michelle Gellar on board, and added even more replay value. ![]() Zombies is part of the expected full package of Black Ops games to this day. As a mode, Nazi Zombies simultaneously brought new life into Call of Duty and followed World at War’s campaign’s footsteps and added a World War 2 motif, reminding the series and its fans of how it all started. ![]()
